Between the Covers: A Naomi Klein Conversation

This week we welcome back journalist and author Naomi Klein conversation , whose new book Doppelganger is a venture into a very different area. As past Between the Covers guest China Mieville says, “Doppelganger is a tour through a twisted mirror world — an intoxicating mix of history, politics, and fiction.”

In a major new piece for The Guardian, co-authored with Astra Taylor, Klein looks at how the apocalyptic fervor of the far right is being embraced by Trump. She joins us to discuss the article, but also what she’s learned from her years of writing about the global economy and working class struggle.

A Conversation with Naomi Klein: Politics, Power, and the Public

Klein is the author of many books, including No Logo, a best-seller that became a manifesto for the anti-globalization movement; The Take, a documentary film about workers running their own factories in Argentina; and Shock Doctrine, which analysed the use of shock tactics by governments and corporations. She’s also written several plays and a book for young adults.

Klein is currently a professor at the University of British Columbia, where she heads the Centre for Climate Justice. Her work explores the links between capitalism, globalization, colonialism and climate change. She’s also a longtime activist and an outspoken critic of Israel. She’s never shied away from the political and takes great pride in connecting her research to real movements for social change. Her enthusiasm for the Green New Deal is a case in point. She sees it as a legislative initiative that connects the dots for activists who’ve been talking about this for a while now.
